Called to Care. Anointed to Shepherd. Commissioned to Build.
The Pastor is one of Christ’s five-fold ministry gifts to the Church. Pastors are shepherds of the flock, called to love, lead, protect, and nurture God’s people. They reflect the heart of the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ, through their compassion, wisdom, and steady guidance.
“And He gave some… to be pastors… to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.” Ephesians 4:11–12
“I will give you shepherds after My own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding.” Jeremiah 3:15
The Core of the Pastoral Calling:
Pastors are spiritual fathers and mothers. They guide believers toward maturity and walk closely with them through life’s battles, helping them heal, grow, and serve.
Key Characteristics of a Pastor:
1. Compassionate Heart
Pastors love the people deeply and sacrificially. They are burdened for the hurting, broken, and wandering.
2. Teacher & Discipler
They nourish the flock with sound doctrine, applying the Word in practical ways that promote growth.
3. Protector of the Flock
Pastors guard against false teaching, spiritual attacks, and division, keeping the Church in unity and truth.
4. Relational Leadership
They thrive in one-on-one ministry, counseling, prayer, and walking with people over time.
5. Builder of Community
Pastors create safe, Spirit-filled environments where believers can thrive, connect, and serve.
The Pastor’s Responsibilities:
· Preach and teach the Word faithfully
· Care for the spiritual and emotional health of the church
· Visit, pray for, and counsel individuals and families
· Equip leaders and volunteers for ministry
· Uphold purity, order, and biblical accountability in the Church
· Create systems for discipleship and outreach
· Lead with vision while serving with humility
“Be shepherds of God’s flock… not because you must, but because you are willing… being examples to the flock.” 1 Peter 5:2–3

A Pastor’s Prayer of Surrender:
“Jesus, the Good Shepherd, I submit to Your leadership. Let me serve Your people with grace and truth. Give me eyes to see, ears to hear, and a heart to love like You. Teach me to lead humbly, feed faithfully, and care deeply. Let Your presence go before me. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

They nurture the called.
They protect the Body.
